Hairbrush (61)No, body brushing is not just another beauty chore designed to steal two minutes of precious sleep in the morning: it has incredible health and skin benefits.
1. "Body brushing helps stimulate circulation and lymphatic flow and shed dry skin cells," says Gabriel. When buying a body brush, look for brushes with coarse, short bristles made from a natural fibre such as cactus or coconut.
2. For best results, Gabriel recommends brushing daily. "Skin is the largest eliminative organ of the body," she says. "Dry body brushing for two minutes every morning before showering ensures the skin works at its peak." A sluggish system can lead to toxin build-up and cellulite, but committing to daily body brushing pays dividends - "body brushing can eliminate nearly 500g of toxins from the body a day!"
3. To really give your circulation a boost, start brushing at the soles of your feet. Work your way up your body (don't forget to brush your palms as well) using long sweeping strokes that extend towards your heart. Body brushing is very effective at smoothing out lumpy or uneven skin tone, so remember to concentrate on problem areas. "Body brushing is great on the bum, inner knee and outer thigh," says Gabriel. "These areas can be prone to holding cellulite and can drop in temperature, leading to a motley appearance." Body brushing also helps prevent ingrown hairs, so pay attention to ingrown-prone areas like the bikini line, lower legs and the backs of the arms.
4. Keeping your brush clean is important. According to Gabriel, for hygiene issues it's important to have your own brush and not share it with others. And don't hold onto it forever. "Body brushes should be replaced once a year as they lose effectiveness as a result of softening and shedding," says Gabriel. Keep your brush in a dry clean place and disinfect it once a week with a natural disinfecting spray.
